Inside King's-Edgehill School

ESL Summer School

In just a few days’ time, we will be welcoming 50 students to our campus.  While school doesn’t start for a few more weeks, our ESL camp will soon be in full swing.  This year we’ll have students from Taiwan, Mexico, Columbia, Germany, and China who will arrive in time for the ESL Summer School.

The camp runs for two weeks, followed by a short trip over the Labour Day Weekend.

The ESL program at King’s-Edgehill School provides students with an opportunity to learn and improve their English through a variety of activities, both in and out of the classroom. The focus of the two week camp is orientation, assessment, and preparing for the school year.

Through practical experience, the students are assimilated into their new environment and immersed in the English speaking community as they open bank accounts, order school and cadet uniforms, and shop for dress shoes, school supplies, and sports shoes.

The days are full, including cultural excursions and sports activities in the afternoons, evenings, and on weekends. We have language classes from Monday through Friday that give the students an introduction to writing - including essays, format and sentence structure, and more. Teachers also work on developing student confidence when speaking in public and engage their listening skills with a variety of oral exercises. A science teacher shows them how to write a lab report and introduces them to the science fair.

We will conduct placement tests for both math and the TOEFL Junior placement and progress testing system. The testing helps place students and tracks their progress throughout the year(s) until they write the IELTS or TOEFL exam required for many international students as part of the university application process in grade 12.
