Inside King's-Edgehill School

Headmaster's Weekly Newsletter -- Week 28

Dear KES Family:

Batman has his utility belt stocked with special gadgets. Superman has his superpowers. Spiderman has his spider abilities and some cool tools (like the web spinner he attaches to his wrist). Although I have asked Santa numerous times for a crystal ball and a magic wand (both would be awesome to have!), like Santa himself, these items only exist in my imagination.

However, although I don’t actually have a pair of rose-coloured glasses, from time to time it feels really good to put some on (even in my imagination).  Simply put, I am happier, and the world looks better with them on.  They are however, a very real expression of my faith that people are inherently good and the planet is not doomed.  It is a good time to have a pair.

A year ago, Nova Scotia paid its dues in April. We all put away our rose-coloured glasses as the harsh realities of the pandemic and unbearable violence and tragedy threatened to overwhelm us. It came in waves and did not seem to stop. As happy as I was to see 2020 in the rear-view mirror this January, I was even happier to turn the page from April to May last spring.  Right now, I am sure that much of Canada west of us is feeling like we did last April as the 3rd wave of this pandemic gathers momentum and intrudes so sharply into their lives.

Meanwhile, we are currently hosting a stunning Art Show in the Dining Hall, multiple teams for a full day of rugby on the turf, and are looking forward to our Senior School play, Almost Maine, in just over a week’s time. I can hardly wait for next weekend as I have been invited to join the parents of our female hockey players on the ice to play a fun game of hockey with their daughters.  There is so much to look forward to one cannot help but feel one’s spirits lift.

Life is not back to normal, and without doubt there are challenges ahead, but I cannot help but reflect upon where we are now compared to last year at this time. I don’t need my rose-colored glasses to feel happy about how far we have come.

Sincerely,

Joe Seagram
