Our Junior Girls Capped it off in Style!

Screen Shot 2020-03-01 at 6.24.08 PMOur Junior Girls’ Basketball team capped off an excellent season in style as we hosted the NSSAF Western Region Tier II Girls’ Basketball Championships this week! A week earlier, our girls played and defeated the team from North Queens Community School to earn the right to play in and host the Regional Championships. In that play-off game, Grade 8 player Sasha Hodgson was unstoppable and accounted for 14 of our 28 points in the game!

At the Regional Championships, our girls opened against a very talented and well-coached team from Bayview (Mahone Bay, NS). Although our girls kept it close early, Bayview’s size and skill made it difficult for our girls to keep pace, and we dropped the first game to the eventual tournament winners. In a losing effort, Jenna Johnston, Eva Palov, and Gabby Shaw stood out. After some lunch and time to refocus, the girls were ready to play in the Consolation final against Shelburne. The pace and energy in this game was electric, and there seemed to be no less than 20 lead changes throughout as each team battled hard. As the game wore on, it was clear that it was not going to be decided until the final seconds, and that was exactly what happened! With less than a minute to play, Shelburne took a two-point lead and in our final possession of the game, the game tying shot flirted with the idea of dropping into the net before it rolled off the side of the rim. In this game, all our girl played very well, but there was no denying that Grade 7 Gabby Shaw was on a mission and she led the way with 18 points!!

Despite the loss, our girls (and their coaches) were very proud of their effort. The performance served as an excellent indicator of just how far our girls had progressed since earlier in the season. In fact, one of the tournament officials who had refereed one of our early season games remarked that he could hardly believe it was the same team!
