Wrestling NS Super Weekend

large_news1311840_1329189Five of our wrestlers took advantage of the opportunity to train with World Bronze Medalist and Brock Wrestling Women’s Team Captain, Hannah Taylor, and Canadian Olympian, Saeed Azarbayjani, over the weekend at the Wrestling Nova Scotia Super Weekend. The event took place over two days and was a great opportunity for our wrestlers to learn from the best. I helped to facilitate the coaches’ clinic during the camp while our wrestlers trained very hard and reviewed very classic and practical standing and takedown techniques. Our student-athletes who attended the clinic included: Callum Lovelace (Grade 11), Bella Turner-Galaise (Grade 10), Megan Mattie (Grade 10), Greg Otto (Grade 10) and Stanislav Matkovskyi (Grade 10). Bella and Greg took advantage of the opportunity to test themselves on the mat with Saeed, who once helped coach Greg’s brother, alumnus Riley Otto (2010), at Western.

Riley, a past Canada Games, U Sport and multi-national champion, organized a 6:00 am practice the previous Thursday for our team. Twelve wrestlers attended this optional practice and were fortunate to be exposed to some excellent and effective ground-wrestling techniques. Riley will host Greg and Quinn over the March break for a week of training in London, Ontario, as a build up to the National Championships in Edmonton, Alberta in early April.

For some of these wrestlers, this past weekend was their fourth weekend in a row with wrestling commitments. All of these athletes will join me and four of their teammates this weekend for the PEI Open and the Atlantic Championships. We have one more camp and a free weekend prior to orig_news1311840_1329188hosting the Regional and Provincial Championships on March 6 & 7. I appreciate the commitment and sacrifices our athletes have made giving up their two winter breaks as well as most weekends. I hope to take four of our wrestlers to the National Championships in early April.
We understand that some students thrive as part of a team while others prefer to compete individually to improve their personal bests. We value both types of competition. Download our Athletics PhotoJournal to discover more about our Athletics Programme.
