At King’s-Edgehill School, our arts programming not only fulfills one of the essential four pillars of every student’s education at KES, but it offers students the unique opportunity to study and excel at the arts programmess that interest them the most including the dramatic arts, visual arts, and music. Arts are part of KES’ regular academic curriculum and are available as IB courses as well. While many schools are cutting back or even eliminating their art programs, KES gives all students access to various arts programming and believes in the benefits of this integral part of a student’s education.
Embracing the arts means KES is also proud to showcase their student’s talent with various events throughout the academic year including big musical theatre performances that weave together music, drama and the visual arts. These performances are typically advertised and attended by the entire KES community.
Each year the Junior School (Grades 6-9) and the Senior School (Grades 10-12) stage musicals from well-known screenplays including The Sound of Music, Oliver, The Wizard of Oz, Beauty and the Beast, Jesus Christ Superstar and Legally Blonde.
Each production casts more than 25 male and female students in lead, supporting and chorus roles. In addition, teachers and students are responsible for choreography, music, set and costume design, promotion and stage management. Student volunteers are also used for light and sound direction and stage crew and KES’s talented musicians also make up a live full pit band for every production.
Putting together a successful musical production is done with the help of many talented teachers, students and parents. The process offers something for everyone, whether your interest is in set design, lighting, performing, painting, or electric guitar! It incorporates the visual arts, music and drama components of the KES art programming and the result is as rewarding as it is memorable for everyone involved.
Each musical performance takes place on the KES campus in The Fountain Centre for the Performing Arts. The theatre is modern, well equipped and seats 400 theatregoers comfortably.
The arts truly do take centre stage at KES and we are proud of every performance and arts event put on by our talented students. For more information on the performed musicals at KES, download our new PhotoJournal, Off Off Broadway.
