Inside King's-Edgehill School

The School Day

A School day at KES will be a little different than years past, here is what you can expect.

Arrival

Families are asked to be aware of personal health every day. If a student or family member has a COVID-19 sign or symptom present, he/she must stay home.

Upon arrival to campus, day students will proceed to the lower Athletic Centre entrance. Following health screening, students will proceed to chapel, assembly, or the first class of the day.

On the first day of School (September 9), Senior students (Grade 10-12) will gather in the theatre and Junior students (Grade 6-9) will gather in the gymnasium.

Students arriving late to campus and all visitors will report to Marshall House for screening prior to entering any School building. Parents are reminded to notify the School in advance for all known absences (attendance@kes.ns.ca).

Masks

Masks will be used inside all School buildings including hallways, cafeteria (except when eating), assembly/chapel, day student locker rooms, bathrooms and library. In the Athletic Centre, masks must be worn in all common areas and may be removed in designated activity areas. Masks may be removed in classrooms when social distancing is possible. Students may be asked to wear a mask in class at any time, at the teacher’s discretion.

Chapel and Assembly

Students will attend chapel one day per week in smaller groupings. Students and staff will be spaced out for safety measures, and masks are required. Grades 6-9 will attend chapel on Monday, Grade 10 on Tuesday, Grade 11 on Thursday, and Grade 12 on Friday (beginning at 8:10 am). Students will also be divided by grade for Wednesday assembly (to be announced).

On mornings where a student does not have chapel, assembly or advisor meetings, they will proceed as follows:

Junior Students Go directly to advisor classroom

Senior Students Go directly to the first class of the day

Traffic Flow

The KES hallways will have arrows to guide students from class to class, and stairwells will be restricted to one direction only. When moving through the School buildings, students should be aware of touch surfaces and try not to touch railings and walls unless necessary.

Classrooms

When in the classroom, seating will be arranged to provide the most separation possible between each student. KES is fortunate to have small class sizes wherein 6 feet of social distancing is often possible. In these settings, students may remove masks (a mask will be required in a more crowded classroom). Outdoor classes will be encouraged.

Students are reminded to come prepared with school supplies on the first day of school. Sharing of school supplies is not permitted, and all items should be clearly labelled with the student’s name.

Spare Classes

Classrooms will be left open throughout the day. Students who are on a spare are encouraged to use a free classroom to work. There will be a limit of 10 students per free classroom. A student may also go to the library or their own residence room during a spare class or free study time.

Snacks and Lunches

Morning snack will be picked up by boarders during breakfast time, and day students are asked to bring their own morning snack to School.

Lunch times will be staggered, based on grade. Over lunchtime, students will be divided into four groups and will dine at specified times between 11:50 am and 1:20 pm. Groups are as follows:

Grades 6-8 11:50 am-12:15 pm

Grades 9-10 12:20 pm-12:40 pm

Grade 10 Students 1/3/5/7 12:40 pm-1:10 pm

Grade 11 Day 1/3/5/7 12:40 pm-1:10 pm

Grade 11 Day 2/4/6/8 1:10 pm-1:30 pm

Grade 12 Day 2/4/6/8 1:10 pm-1:30 pm

Grade 12 Day 1/3/5/7 12:40 pm-1:10 pm

Both boarding and day students are welcome to pick up an afternoon snack during lunchtime in the cafeteria. Day students may bring snacks and/or a lunch from home.

Free Time

There will be more outdoor spaces created for students this year, including picnic tables, courts, fields, and canopy shelters. During free time, students are encouraged to go outside to socialize, rest and play. Certain indoor gathering areas, such as the cafeteria and student lounge, will be off limits or have restricted use for socializing during the School day. In addition to outdoor spaces, students will have the use of classrooms over lunch or for free time (10 student maximum). Each day students will have a locker and/or a cubby space for storing belongings.

After School Pick-Up, Carpooling and Bussing

Early pick up is encouraged when possible for all day students (following sports or special activities). Please note that if families are arranging carpools, masks should be worn for all passengers during the drive.

During the pandemic period, Junior School day students will return home on an early 3:30 pm bus immediately following daily sports. Exceptions will be made for students with extracurricular or athletic commitments that run later. This early bus will not run on Wednesdays. The regular bus departs KES at 5:30 pm.
