On Monday, May 17th, all students in Grades 6-8 took part in the final math competition of the year. It was the last in a series of yearlong challenging University of Waterloo CEMC (Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing) contests designed for students in Grades 7-12. Sincere thanks are extended toMr. Kershawwho designed a special Grade 6 online version of the contest so that our youngest students could also benefit from the excellent problem-solving opportunities that these contests provide.
Results for the CEMC Grade 9 Pascal Contest, which was written in February, also arrived recently. It was pleasing to see that our top three scorers—Sadie Junger, Danica Scully, and Gintaro Takatsu—created a School team that placed third in Nova Scotia. Impressively, our top scorerSadie Jungerplaced second as an individual out of a field of 548 students in the province. Way to go,Sadie! And, only days ago, the results of the Grade 9 CEMC Fryer Contest were posted. This contest is marked on solution design as well as correct answers so there is an added challenge. Approximately 50 students in Nova Scotia took part in this competition, andLucas Martinplaced first, andSadie Junger and Sabine Wellardtied for second out of all students in the province who took part in this challenge. In addition, the top five participants—Lucas Martin, Sadie Junger, Sabine Wellard, William Larder, Elizabeth Hardy and Claire Morton—created a School team whose score earned usfirst placein the province! It is worth noting that our fourth-place student,William Larder, is currently in Grade 7. Williamhas been a regular participant in all on-campus math enrichment opportunities as well as all virtual Dalhousie University Math Circles events.
I congratulate all students who participated and challenged their problem-solving abilities. Well done! Below is the summary of all contest top scorers at King’s-Edgehill School:
