Sep/22/2020 Our Grade 9 students hit the ground running this year.  They worked their way through the initial orientation and on the first Friday of classes, they started their Bronze level of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award training.  For those of you who are unfamiliar with the program, Bronze is the first level in the Duke of Edinburgh program and is an established feature here at KES.  ![zoom\_news1362578\_1363004](https://blog.kes.ns.ca/hs-fs/hubfs/zoom_news1362578_1363004.jpg?width=600&name=zoom_news1362578_1363004.jpg) ![zoom\_news1362578\_1362993](https://blog.kes.ns.ca/hs-fs/hubfs/zoom_news1362578_1362993.jpg?width=600&name=zoom_news1362578_1362993.jpg) Throughout the day, the students learned all aspects of living in the woods with minimal equipment.  **Sergeant Major Callum Lovelace** gave an excellent demonstration on the features and the packing of a rucksack.  Our **Training Sergeant Major, Grace Gallant** followed up with a demonstration of the proper technique to pitch a tent. Follow up classes covered such material as how to make a food hang, lighting of stoves and lanterns, map and compass reading and how to light a fire. The Cape is quite a challenge for someone who has not hiked a long distance.  The students were buoyed up by the encouragement of the staff members and the senior cadets.  The day was beautiful, and the fresh air was exuberant.  What a great day to be a student at King’s-Edgehill School!
