Athletes of the Week February 2020

large_news1312751_1330417“Athletes of the Week” (AOW) are selected based on athletic performance and sportsmanship. Positive sporting behaviour is valued at KES and integral to our Athletic Philosophy and School Mission Statement emphasizing gentleness and learning and dignity and respect.

For the Week of February 3 - 9
Junior Boy: Isaiah Johnson stepped up when needed at a recent Junior Boys’ Basketball playoff game. In a do-or-die situation, he controlled the rebounds and scored key “buckets” for a win over École Rose-des-Vents of Greenwood. Our top seasonal scorer – Alan – injured his ankle early in the game and had to sit out. Isiah picked up the slack with his skill and leadership and led us to a win. Well done, Isaiah!

For the Week of February 10 - 16
Junior Boy: Matthew Power recently participated in the Nova Scotia Winter AA Championship swim meet at St. Francis Xavier University, and he brought home medals in all of the events in which he was entered. He won GOLD in the 100 butterfly and 50 breast; SILVER in the 400 individual medley and 200 individual medley; and BRONZE in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke. His relay team earned GOLD in the men’s 4x100 freestyle relay. He finished the weekend being awarded the men’s 2nd place top point aggregate trophy. Well done, Matthew!

Junior Girl: N/A

Senior Girl: Madi Taljaard won 2 GOLD medals this past weekend at Biathlon Provincials in PEI. In the sprint race on Saturday, she finished 8 minutes ahead of the second-place finisher, missing only 3 shots. With her hard work and determination, she was able to finish on top against 10 other athletes and hopes to score a spot at Nationals in March! Congratulations, Madi!

Senior Boy: Ricardo Torres is a special basketball player in that he is able to accomplish the impossible.  Forty-foot jump shots, making layups that looked blocked, and my favourite - shutting down the opposition’s best player.  All of this comes in a friendly, gregarious package.  Should Ricardo not foul out of our next few games, our team stands a good chance of winning with Ricardo adding his special flair to solid team play. Great work, Ricardo!

Athletics is one of the four pillars of a KES education. Sports are mandatory at every age and part of the day's schedule. With that much time devoted to physical activity, it's a good thing we have so many options!  Download the Athletics Photojournal.
