Creating Personal Sankalpas

At last our School's growing community has found a little space to call our own. Settled on the edge of campus, a beautiful and tranquil studio has been constructed as a sanctuary for students and staff alike to get away from the hustle and bustle and enjoy the practice of Yoga. As the fall term winds to a close, we reflect on a season of movement, mindfulness and extension activities that have allowed us to broaden the scope of our Yoga practice.

One such activity involved our yogis taking to the Art Studio to create pieces of art that captured our Sankalpa, a word that translates to “heartfelt intention”. Some people refer to it as their personal mantra or a “seed” of growth in the area of life that is calling for attention. We spent time creating our own personal Sankalpas and translating those words onto beautiful and original cards.

More recently, we had the pleasure of being joined by Dr. Adrienne Wood (Class of 2002), a local naturopath, who spoke of how we should eat to live instead of living to eat. The message was that food is a fuel that involves conscious choice and balance so that we can operate at our optimal health.

Sweets are there to be enjoyed, but ultimately, food and the process of preparing it should be a mindful practice in our day. We have greatly enjoyed our time together this term and are looking forward to turning up the heat and challenge as we move into a term of advanced practice and in depth inquiry into the practice of Yoga.
