Headmaster's Weekly Newsletter -- Week 2

Dear KES Family:

We sang “Lord of the Dance” this morning! Outside…in the Quad…with Will Ahearn (2021) on piano!  It was a magical and unexpected pleasure.  In this day and age of restrictions, how freeing it was to go outside, spread out, and sing together. Hurrah!

One of the duties of the Chapel Prefects is to organize the morning servers. On Thursday morning this week, Lucas Gimenez (2021) had finished lighting the sacristans’ candles when he discovered that you cannot blow out the match while wearing a mask.  It was a uniquely humorous “COVID-19” moment. However, it illustrated a few things.

First of all, it demonstrated that masks do indeed work. Secondly, we are all getting so used to wearing them that we forget we have them on.  As bizarre as all of this is, these are both good things.

Each healthy day that passes allows us all to feel a little better about the start of this school year.  Nova Scotia continues to be one of the safest places in the world from a pandemic perspective, and there are no indications that this will change.  A huge thank-you to everyone in the Atlantic Bubble for being so conscientious for so long! Our Atlantic community has dug deep and shown admirable stamina.

It is always easier to say “no” when considering a proposal. The trick is how to avoid being the “Abominable No-man” and find a safe way to have a school dance, or participate in the annual Terry Fox Run, or to run Cadets.  Finding creative solutions may take a little more effort, but I am learning that sometimes what we stumble across ends up better than the original.  Our August graduation did not include everyone (alas) but the Class of 2020 and their families loved having the event outdoors and having an unwavering focus on the graduates. Our outdoor dance in the Quad was a huge success last Saturday – despite having to wear a mask the whole time, the students told me it was the best KES dance they had ever had. Who wouldn’t like dancing under the stars with all their friends after seven months apart?

I look forward to another two weeks of healthy living. I am impatient to include the day students in more on-campus activities.  Being so separate after hours is not our style. It rankles.  Inclusivity is at the core of our School culture, and I hope that before we get too used to being separate from each other that we can be more of a true KES family again.

Sincerely,

Joe Seagram
