KES Relay for Life Training

large_news1318167_1337921A select group of students attended "Relay University" at Mount Allison a couple of weeks ago. This was a conference designed to train student leaders in 17 schools across the Maritimes in how to run a Relay for Life event in their communities. Relay for Life is a fundraising event in support of the Canadian Cancer Society that has gradually been adopted across the country over the past 20 years. Students had a full day of collaborating with other schools in order to begin planning their own version of the Relay event. The room was filled with energy, enthusiasm, and a wide array of emotions all day long.

This event has developed into a passion project for students at KES. The funds raised through Relay go to a variety of cancer research and support organizations. This means large_news1318167_1337920that participants and donors are contributing to things such as further research for new treatments, financial aid for people entering clinical trials, and support programmes for cancer patients struggling with their disease. Where our School is home to many who have been personally affected by cancer in various ways, KES wants to do their part to help. Not only is the Relay for Life student committee working tirelessly to organize this event, seeking sponsors, donors, and activities for the day, they are also opening up registration to the community and reaching out to cancer survivors in the area. This will be something that celebrates not only the KES community but also the larger community in which we live.

The training day at Mount Allison was extremely moving and designed to get students excited about this massive event. It has certainly worked its magic on our KES students, and everyone is looking forward to what is sure to be a fantastic new annual event.
