Thursday was a great first day for the 254 Cadet Corps. I did a job that I thoroughly enjoy; I promoted excellent young Cadets into supervisory ranks. One of my most pleasurable moments was bestowing the rank of Master Warrant Officer on young Callum Lovelace. Callum has been in the Cadet training system for 5 years. He is an exemplary cadet with an intimate knowledge of drill, both foot and ceremonial. During summer Cadet Training, Callum has commanded quarter guards for visiting dignitaries as well as leading winning drill teams in Cadet competitions. Recently, Callum had the pleasure of being invited by the Minister of National Defence, the Honorable Harjit Sajjan, to participate in a webinar to honour his great-grandfather, Staff Sergeant Harry Lovelace. Callum spoke on behalf of the family. See the details below.
“On Monday, in an intimate ceremony attended by Lovelace family members, LGen Wayne Eyre, Commander of the Canadian Army, and members of the Canadian Armed Forces, the Canadian Government honoured Hometown Hero Staff Sergeant Harry Lovelace at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa.
Great-grandson Callum Lovelace joined via video link to share family memories from KES.
During the Battle of Normandy, Harry Lovelace was deployed overseas with the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. As a senior non-commissioned officer responsible for 800 troops based in Bordon, England, Lovelace bravely led a team to repair disabled Allied tanks and return them to action. Known as a “mechanical genius” he invented many devices that improved the performance of combat vehicles, while reducing service time. For his efforts, Lovelace was awarded the British Empire Medal by King George VI in 1945.”
In 2018, the Canadian Forces honoured the Lovelace family by naming an ARV after SSgt H. Lovelace.
