Inside King's-Edgehill School

Alumni mentorship program

At King’s-Edgehill School (KES), we know your child’s education should challenge them now while constantly keeping an eye to their future. We prepare our students for lifelong learning and understand that career preparation is an important responsibility. Through our Alumni Mentorship Program, we hope that your child will graduate with a foundation towards a rewarding career.

Outside perspectives and current, relevant information is an important part of career investigation. With this in alumni_career_nightmind, we held a Career Night at KES on Monday, October 20th. Our 11th and 12th graders were invited along with King’s-Edgehill School faculty and alumni to discuss possible career paths and to network. We are very fortunate to have an active and engaged alumni who are eager to stay involved with current students.

The format for Career Night was round-table style: 16 students per table, with presenters given time at each table to discuss how their educational and career paths progressed. Our alumni presenters covered an array of professions from dentistry, management, teaching, homeopathic medicine, sales, entrepreneurship, law and government, and Canadian Armed Forces.

Our students paid rapt attention to our alumni presenters. During the post-presentation reception, they also had the opportunity to speak one-to-one and ask follow up questions. This was a chance to let our students practice their skills in effective communication and networking. We also aimed to give our students the opportunity to build relationships that could help them in future career development. We prepare all students to draw on a range of different tools to succeed in life beyond the classroom.

One of our goals for the night was to establish mentoring relationships between KES students and alumni. Who better to help your child with future decisions than someone who has shared their educational past? Being privy to the ins, outs and advantages of KES, the community and job market after graduation, and knowing what it takes to be successful, alumni mentors can guide the growth of your child and help keep them accountable.

Career nights provide your child with real world information about what life is like after school, what they can expect from the career they choose. This information is invaluable; so are the relationships built during this event. Having a like-minded adult with whom your child can discuss their goals and to whom they can be held accountable is a priceless addition to traditional classroom education. It also helps in the classroom, refocussing your child, invigorating their drive to succeed and appreciating the work that it takes to get there.

The achievements of our alumni are a testament to the KES foundation, encouraging each student to be the best they can be and get to the place they want to be in life. Making informed decisions about a career path is challenging. Having tools to make it easier helps. Career night is an opportunity for students to begin taking ownership of their future and to carve a path in life.

Students attend school to get an education. The purpose of that education is to gain knowledge and wisdom, find and pursue a rewarding career, and become a contributing member of the community. At King’s-Edgehill School, you found a place that establishes the foundation for all these things. Career night is just one example of how we help your student pursue their dreams, rise to challenges, to do and be more.
