Inside King's-Edgehill School
Our Grade 9 Geography classes welcomed a guest speaker this week. Mr. Simon Irving from Wolfville grew up playing baseball locally, and as a past coach, we have kept in touch. Simon recently set his career as a Geologist to the side for a bit to go for a walk…..a really long walk! Simon decided to walk the Pacific Coast Trail from end to end! He walked from the Mexican border to Canada through the states of California, Oregon and Washington. Our Grade 9 class enjoyed hearing about his epic hike through the desert, over mountains, and alongside forest fires, withstanding hunger and of course the rains of the northwest. Let’s just say, it made our Keji Adventurous Journey seem like a “walk in the park”. Simon spoke of the planning, physical preparation, ambition, friendships, generosity, goal setting, solitude and deprivation that challenged him along his journey. In this age of jet travel, it was integral to hear that the continent is very expansive and vast, especially if measured one step at a time. When asked how many steps he believes he recorded, he said “north of 6 million.” That is geography at a fundamental level. Happy Trails!
