Athletes of the Week September-October 2019

athlete of the week-11“Athletes of the Week” (AOW) are selected based on athletic performance and sportsmanship. Positive sporting behaviour is valued at KES and integral to our Athletic Philosophy and School Mission Statement emphasizing gentleness and learning and dignity and respect.

For the Week of September 23rd – 29th

Junior Boy - Alejandro (Ale) Palacios has brought a great deal to his soccer team this season. He is a talented and athletic player who is useful to his team wherever he is on the pitch. During the team’s trip to Rothesay Netherwood School, Ale made his mark as a striker and often drew two or even three defenders to him on his attacks. Despite the heavy coverage, he was a frequent goal scorer and used the range of his kick and the accuracy of his left foot to great effect. Well done, Alejandro.

Junior Girl - Gabby Shaw - Although Gabby’s first goal of the season was for the Senior Girls’ Soccer team in their 3-2 win over Kennebecasis Valley High School, the Junior girls are fortunate to have this athletic speedster on their roster. Gabby’s confidence and know-how as keeper allowed the team to hold a 1-0 win over NKEC in their first league game of the season. Gabby continued to show her versatility on the field at RNS, where she popped two goals in versus Sacred Heart, and turned away countless shots back in the net against Halifax Grammar School. Congratulations, Gabby!

Senior Girl - Jill Griffith led the charge in anchoring the KES backline and midfield in our Senior Girls soccer, 2-1 road win over West King’s High School on Monday, September 23rd. And then, this past weekend, Jill scored 4 goals in 2 games and set up teammates for others as KES won the South Colchester Academy High School Girls Annual Soccer Tournament. Congratulations, Jill!

Senior Boy - Mario Meira-Lavoie started our soccer game against Yarmouth on the right wing but ended up as our lone striker by the end. He won a penalty which gave us a 1-0 lead early in the first half but, in winning the penalty, received an injury and had to come off the field. During the second half, and after receiving treatment, Mario went back on. He went up front on 1 and a half legs but battled hard and ended up scoring a hat-trick and helping our D1 Boys secure a 5-3 win over Yarmouth in Yarmouth. It is hard work and determination like this that our boys will need throughout the season to be successful. Well done, Mario!

For the Week of September 30th – October 6th

Junior Boy - Chalo Castaldi Peraza has been a steadfast anchor in the midfield this season. He is a skilled playmaker and relentless defender. He always seems to emerge from a mass of his opponents’ legs and cleats unscathed and in possession of the ball. He supports his team expertly by playing his position effectively and using his attacking speed to create opportunities on net. Chalo is also a thoughtful player who anticipates plays and opportunities, positioning himself to release or block the flow of a play. Well done, Chalo.

Junior Girl - Sabine Wellard is in her second year on the Junior Girls’ Soccer team, and she is showing she has what it takes to help lead her teammates to success. On the team’s recent trip to RNS, Sabine played the majority of minutes in all 4 weekend games and, she was relied on in both centre midfield and centre back to shut down the opposition time and time again. By taking all of the team’s free kicks and drilling them far up the field time and time again, Sabine contributed to a very competitive game versus Sacred Heart and a hard fought battle against Halifax Grammar School. Congratulations, Sabine!

Senior Girl - Maya Faucher’s performance in a lopsided loss to powerhouse NKEC was outstanding. Saves from close range, mid to far range, breakaway saves, collecting crossed balls into dangerous and crowded areas in front of goal, having the courage to play the first pass out of defence to start the attack, great distribution with her hands and feet, and a razor-sharp focussed level of concentration were key factors in Maya being the best KES player of the day. On Friday, Maya recorded a shutout against Digby HS, in cold and miserable conditions. What was really impressive was Maya’s passing that ignited the KES attack. Time after time, KES defenders would pass back to Maya to relieve opponent’s pressure only for Maya to pass to a wide open teammate who had time and space to look and play forward. Great work, Maya!

Senior Boy - François Richard - Many cross country running records were broken in Belfast, Maine, at the Festival of Champions on October 5th. François led the KES crew as he placed 17th among, exactly, 1000 male runners. The top 20 earn medals and François is the first KES student to own one. Not only did he run a personal best 5k time of 16:32, he also bested the previous KES top time on the Belfast course of 18:27 held by Jacob Evans ‘17 in his 2016 season. Keep up the great work, François!
