First Run of the Season

Dodging branches, trying not to slip in mud, and always trying to do their best were among the reasons why the 115 runners that were guests of ours on September 24th for our annual race laced their shoes.  Before sharing a few storylines from the races, I must begin by thanking Ms. Teresa Sanford on behalf of the Gladys M Manning Memorial Home and Mr. Danny Dill for so kindly allowing us to use their magnificent properties. Thank you.

For as much as I enjoy this day, I actually get to see very little of the race because I am driving around the course in a golf cart trying to make sure that no one gets lost, that the course markings stay true, and trying to put out any fires before they get started (and there was one wee fire).  That said, there were a few things I couldn’t help but notice. Francois Richard ‘21 ran in his first race in a KES jersey as he placed second behind a runner who broke the course record and became the third fastest person to ever run this course.   Edward He ‘21 showed his mettle as he returned less than 24 hours earlier from a week-long, exhausting, trip to Holland and yet donned his uniform to give his best effort.  Quinn Emery ‘22 is no stranger to a KES competition as he has chased many a scared boy around the wrestling ring, just that this time he was chasing around a 5 km course.  Like Emery, fellow cross country rookie Eric Qian ‘23 was giving his best over our very hilly course breathing heavily, but still carrying forward.  Leading our girls’ team and earning a bronze medal performance among senior girls was newcomer Aitana Cisneros ‘23.  Placing 8th in the senior girls division and looking nearly exhausted when I saw her (a good look) was Ela Perez ‘21.  Though Alena Wood ‘21 spends part of her sport time with horses, she was full-time cross country today as she hammered home to collect the last spot among the top 10.  Just behind her was teammate and in-the-running-for-most-improving athlete, Dalia Alrashdan ‘20.  My most senior runner on the KES team today was actually a junior as Jenny Zhang ‘23 was our only returning girl racing today.  She showed her toughness as she placed among the top 10 in the intermediate girls division.

As you are about to see, the hosting of this event is a team and school-wide effort.  It could not be the success that is without the help provided by Mr. Glen FaucherMs. Sue ColeMs. Sue BouwmanMr. Derek Bouwman, Mr. Kim Walsh, Mr. Alan Dick, Ms. Jennie Weisner, and all of the efforts provided by the 18 student volunteers.   A special thank you to Mr. Marshall Davidson and his dedicated crew for providing material support behind the scenes. I brag about these men to every soon-to-be jealous coach that I meet. Were it not for each of these people, Mr. Brodi Robinson, Mr. Guy Payne and I would not be able to pull this off.

There's more fun, fields and friends waiting for you here at KES! Find out more about a typical day in our downloadable photojournal, A Day in the Life of a King's-Edgehill School Day Student.
