Colin Stephens, from Windsor, Nova Scotia, began with us in Grade 7 and, over the years, he has established himself as a consistent presence in our Junior School. A reflective thinker, Colin is looked up to by his classmates both because of his physical stature and his willingness to lend a hand. On top of his stellar work in the classroom, Colin has been involved with our Cards for Caring volunteer programme, peer tutoring, and who could forget his clutch game-winning-buzzer-beater during basketball season!
What does leadership mean to you?
I think leadership is being a role model and being someone who sets an example for those around them.
What makes a good leader?
Someone who is friendly and outgoing. Also, someone who can speak up when there is a hard situation. They are people who step up when there is a tough situation.
Do you think people are born with that ability to step up when situations are hard?
I think some traits people are born with, but I think mostly those are things people develop over time with experience and learning.
How do you think people would describe you as a leader?
I’m not too much of a vocal leader, but I think they would see me as a calm and relaxed leader. Even though I might keep to myself, I hope they would know I am there when the need arises. I am working on ensuring my voice.
Who is someone you look up to in terms of leadership?
Generally, I look up to people who are trying to change other people’s lives for the better. One individual who I actually look up to is Kanye West as I really respect his creative talents.
If you could go back to give Grade 7 Colin advice, what would it be?
I would tell younger me to voice his opinion and share his voice more. This is still something that I’m developing and it’s getting easier as I gain more confidence, but it is something I could have worked on earlier too.
How difficult is it to be a leader in our School during Distance Learning?
It’s a bit harder, for sure. I don’t get to see anyone else in younger grades, or even the other Grade 9 classes, but within my own class it’s possible. Now it’s more about taking responsibility for what I need to do and being engaged during class discussions.
What are your goals as we finish the school year?
I really want to stay on top of my schoolwork in these last two weeks, and I also want to try to stay fit and physically strong.
