“I was smiling all day. I woke up smiling, I was having fun. My goal today was just to enjoy every moment I could…My key word for the day was: have fun.”
This may have been said this week by Canadian snowboarder and Olympic silver medalist Eliot Grondin, but it could have been said by any student at this week’s Winter Carnival. The spirit of the day was fabulous! From the very start it was clear that everyone’s goal for the day was fun. Face paint and hair ribbons, flat t-shirts and hoodies and toques (great idea Vair Mac!), drums and portable speakers, all added to the wonderful atmosphere of the day. The flat/house outfits were spirited and fun. Laughter, shouts of encouragement and joy, singing and chants, were to be heard everywhere.
Mother Nature had given us lots of snow, mild temperatures, and perfect conditions for toboggan and snowshoe races. The snow sculptures and flat flags added an artistic flair to the day. A firm crust on the fields created some challenging yet humorous moments, and spectacular wipe-outs as well.
Winter Carnival is a day of competition, but I have to wonder if Eliot Grondin’s desire to have fun while competing is his key to success. Regardless of age or event, every team at KES had its impressive athletic moments. I particularly loved the cheering for other teams and the good-natured sportsmanship amongst classmates and friends. It was a day that took the entire School outside onto the snow, bringing us all together.
Our senior day boys (SDB) may have emerged victorious, but we were all winners on the day. It was just what we needed.
Sincerely,
Joe Seagram
