Helping The Bahamas Relief Effort

bahamas releifOn September 1st, 2019, the relentless Hurricane Dorian attacked my beautiful home, The Bahamas, as a Category 5, 200 MPH storm. This storm wreaked havoc on the islands of Grand Bahama and Abaco for two days. During this time, homes were destroyed, many killed or now fighting for their lives, and heartbreak was felt all over the world. Though the awareness was strong, there was no such thing as enough help. The majority of Grand Bahama is now covered in water and Abaco is completely devastated. After the storm, all residents that could be found were relocated to the capital, Nassau, with nothing much more than the clothes on their backs. Nassau is very limited in size, with only so many shelters to provide for the thousands that were affected.

This devastation impacted everyone, everywhere; thus, there were helping hands all around. My second home, here at King’s-Edgehill, was one of them. As soon as we could, Youth-in-Action (a committee ran by the students) began raising money to support my home. First, we organized a canteen at recent soccer games, then, we had a Bahamian Day where the entire student body wore the colors of The Bahamian Flag (black, gold and aquamarine) complimented with a Bahamian-themed bake sale. Within those few days, over $900 was raised and donated to The Bahamas Hurricane Relief Fund.

Hurricane Dorian has been the worst storm to impact The Bahamas since Hurricane Floyd (1999) and Hurricane Katrina (2005). Dorian’s death toll in The Bahamas currently stands at 50 people (many bodies still being found), but over 1,000 people are still missing. On behalf of my country and everyone impacted, I would like to thank those who supported and continue to keep this beautiful country, my home, in their thoughts and prayers.
