IB Visual Artist - Xinyi (Cindy) Li

I hope you enjoy our virtual exhibitions. We admire not only our students' skills and creativity but also their courage in sharing their work with us. Please join me in congratulating our 2020 IB Visual Arts students on their hard work and achievements.

I would like to introduce IB Artist: Xinyi (Cindy) Li

While presenting my work, I want to show the audience the artistry of the Chinese culture and share more about myself and my experience. As a person that is dedicated to the color expression on the canvas, I love to use colors to show people the Chinese street scenes and flowers—the beauty of the eastern culture. I also want to show others the type of person I am through my drawings and the things that I love. After viewing my exhibition, I hope people will find that I am a person who loves taking photos, drawing and sharing my own culture.

I chose five artworks of my own, and the first one is the Chinese peony, the national flower of China. I decided to use acrylic to draw the painting, and the flowers are painted using watercolor brushes. I want to show the pure beauty of the Chinese flowers. In western culture the tulip and rose are symbolic flowers. Drawing the Chinese peony is a good way for me to convey the beauty of the Chinese flower. The other picture is a street scene with multiple billboards representing each little Chinese shop on the street, the unique brick walls and the huge rectangle billboards.

I will exhibit my artworks in an order; first I will show my self-portrait, that will be an introduction to the people about myself, who is a common girl with black hair and black eyes. I am also full of imagination and deep thinking. Then, there is the pencil sketching and my transfer project. I love to use my camera to record my life, and to show that my first touch to art is pencil sketching, using only black, white and grey to create a sense of depth and third dimension which is so interesting to me. Finally, I want to show everyone the beauty of China, the Chinese flowers, and the Chinese street scenes.

We were not able to have our IB Art Exhibition because of our school closure due to the pandemic.

Figure 1: Chinese Peony (In progress during the school closure)
Acrylic, 76 cm x 76 cm, 3 weeks/still in progress because of the coronavirus
I have loved flowers for a long time, and I wanted to use acrylics to draw the flower which represents my Chinese culture by mixing colors and drawing blossoms. I wish to express the true beauty of the peony flower.

Figure 2: My Own Self-Portrait (2018/10)
Acrylic and marker pens, 51 cm x 61 cm
My intention of drawing this art piece is to draw a picture of myself and express what type of person I am. So, I chose one of my selfies to draw. Just like my self-portrait, I am a normal girl wearing a pink hoodie in the picture, but with the marker pen drawing section is to express that I am a person who’s also thinking and laughing at the same time instead of being a normal girl. I am always thinking, and I am creative inside my heart as well.

Figure 3: My Own Camera (2019/9)
Mixed media: Nail polish remover and a photo image, Transfer project, 21.0 cm x 29.7cm
The camera is owned by me in the picture. It is the camera that I love, and I bought it in grade 8. I love to use this camera to take pictures and it can process the pictures immediately after I finish taking the picture. So, I decided to take a photo of my little magic camera and do my transfer project. I used the cotton swab and the nail polish remover to display the color on the cardboard.

Figure 4: Chinese Street Scene (2019/3/1)
Oil painting, 76 cm x 100 cm
The drawing is an indoor street scene I found in one huge shopping center. It is designed as the style of an old Shanghai street. I want to show the people the beauty of a Chinese street. I have seen many people using oil painting to express the street scenes and flowers in Europe and Japan, so I wanted to complete this piece as an oil painting.

Figure 5: Figure Plaster Model (2019/8)
Pencil sketching, 29.7 cm x 42.0 cm
This pencil sketching is the drawing that I finished during the class time. It is a man looking at his left side. I love to use the pencil to depict the black, grey and white color on my paper. The original source is the plaster model I saw in my classroom.
