It was great to be able to celebrate our Annual KES Athletic Banquet last Thursday evening. I was very pleased to see and hear so many of our Coaches chatting on Zoom prior to the 8:00 pm start of the event. I truly appreciate the time, commitment and passion that our Coaches invest in our athletics programme. I shared with the audience, that although there is an expectation for our faculty to coach for two terms, we have had about a dozen, over the past couple of decades, who coach more than two terms of sport. This reflects the selflessness and commitment to our student-athletes. These coaches share many highs and lows with their teams and develop strong bonds with the students, while mentoring the essential life skills that we learn in sport and then apply to life.
Our Varsity and Prep coaches are supported by our Team Captains who fill in all the gaps and share leadership responsibilities with Coaches, while at the same time balancing all that our KES student–athletes must manage day to day. These are very busy, talented and exceptional young men and women. Mr. Rory Campbell and I are fortunate to work directly with these inspiring young men and women on our Captain’s Council. These students give up their lunchtimes in order to meet as a group to discuss, debate and share experiences and numerous leadership tasks and topics to enhance everyone’s experience through sport. We are greatly indebted to our Captains.
These Student Captains play an integral role in our programmes and are only a part of the success of our teams. This night was an opportunity to celebrate the MOST OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTORS of our teams. These student-athletes contribute on and off the courts, fields, floors, mats and ice. They are agents for success and comprise a thorough balance of competitive excellence, team spirit, selflessness and clearly reflect the values of the Missions of our School, through Gentleness, Learning, Dignity and Respect. Our student–athletes and Coaches who participate in our Recreational activities certainly share in the success of our Varsity and Prep programmes and are also essential to our programmes’ success.
