Dylan, the new official mascot of KES, celebrated his 1st birthday on March 6th!
Dylan (name meaning: born from the ocean) is our live representative of the KES Highlander identity, and he lives just thirty minutes down the road at Hidden Meadow Farm in Cambridge, NS.
Last week we had some special events to celebrate this monumental occasion! Students were encouraged to enter a draw to visit Dylan, and the lucky winners got to see this lovable Highland at Hidden Meadow Farm, bring him a giant birthday card, take advantage of some photo ops, and wish him well.
While at the farm, students had the opportunity to see other older members of the fold. What an impressive and beautiful group of noble animals! Farm owners Stacy and Cory Corkum were onsite and explained the function of the Highland’s horns to the group. The horns are sense organs which not only have blood flowing through them but are also connected to the sinus system of the cow, allowing air to circulate through the bone! Blood flow through the horns helps to heat or cool the animal. The horns also help to designate the identity and position within a fold. The “Boss Cow” (leader within the fold) has horns that curve forward and up, a shape that is the result of the pushing and bunting required to maintain a place at the top of the hierarchy!
The week’s birthday festivities also included a dress down day, where all funds collected were donated to the farm, specifically for Dylan’s daily care. Chartwells made delicious treats in honour of the BIG day, offering up KES Highlander cupcakes for dessert and decorating the cafeteria with balloons and streamers.
We are looking forward to bringing other groups to see Dylan and his fold at Hidden Meadow Farm and to welcoming him to campus for special events in the near future!
