Our KES Senior Girls’ Soccer team experienced a tournament victory as well as a great learning opportunity this past week, as our team won the South Colchester Academy Senior Girls Soccer Tournament in Brookfield and were soundly outplayed 5-0 in Canning against NKEC on Monday afternoon.
On Friday afternoon in Brookfield, KES outlasted SCA 5-4 in a high-scoring game in which KES seemed to be in complete control of the play. However, inconsistent mental lapses gifted SCA’s willing forwards clear-cut chances to pounce and capitalize on our mistakes. They made no mistake in making this result far closer than what it should have been. Full credit to SCA.
Allie Martin continued her offensive production as she fired home 3 excellent goals to lead KES. Jill Griffith, dominant all game in midfield and then at central defence, demonstrated her offensive prowess by scoring twice.
On Saturday morning, KES claimed the 2019 South Colchester Academy Tournament banner by defeating Hants North High School 4-0. In playing their most dominant game of the season to date, KES strengthened all parts of their game play: maintaining better team organization in attack and on defence, completing more passes, and more consecutive passes, and producing more shots on goal. Protecting goalkeeper Maya Faucher and not conceding a goal was a solid team effort, too.
Jill Griffith opened the scoring and led the KES attack with 2 goals and a huge number of completed passes to open teammates. Hannah Bryant, out since the RNS Tournament, played the forward position and scored a breakaway on her return to action, as did Tyra Alleyne, injured since the beginning of the year and in her first game of the season. Goalkeeper Maya Faucher was not as busy as she was on Friday, but she was excellent in receiving back passes and re-starting the attack. Well done, team!
On Monday afternoon in Canning, the girls learned a number of valuable lessons as they were over-powered by a dominant NKEC Titans squad. A slow start accompanied by nervous and tentative play were all NKEC needed as they applied pressure early and often, scoring 4 first-half goals in the process. KES regrouped at halftime, made a few tactical changes, and were a much tougher and competitive squad in the 2nd frame, allowing a single goal. Maya Faucher was awesome in goal for KES! Fearing and being intimidated by an opponent is much different than respecting and digging in against one. With both of these mindsets clearly on display in this game, a valuable lesson was learned, bluntly, and stowed away for future reference, on a beautiful Annapolis Valley afternoon.
