Meet Our IB Visual Arts Students - #2Our Grade 12 students in the IB Visual Arts class and the Academic Art course have come together this term to complete the International Baccalaureate Visual Arts programme. The students are preparing for their final Exhibition and exam which will take place in April.  After the March break, our students will be focusing on setting up their exhibition, writing a rationale and exhibition texts, and uploading their artwork.
 
In April, the exhibition will be displayed for two weeks in our Stanfield Dining Hall/McLellan Annex.

It has taken months of preparation, and each student is required to produce a number of studio artworks based on their direction or theme. This year, we have twenty Grade 12 students who will be exhibiting their work. The Grade 11 students will also take part in this exhibition by helping the Grade 12 students display their work, and they will also be given the opportunity to exhibit two of their artworks.
 
During the next month, we will be showcasing our artists in our weekly Newsletter along with one of their favourite art projects they have completed during this two-year course. I hope you enjoy reading the profiles of our budding, young artists.
 
This week we are highlighting Jayden Morrow, Amelia MacDonald, Kaylee Hickey and Jiaying (Amy) Zhang.
 
Jayden Morrow is from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia and she has been at KES since Grade 8 (5 years).
Jayden’s artwork choice is Turtle (Protector) - Acrylic on Masonite - 4 feet x 4 feet
I chose to share this acrylic painting because this subject is very close to me. When I was younger, I was taught by my Dad the symbolism of each of the animals in my culture. The four animal pillars are: turtle, bear, wolf and eagle. I chose the turtle because it is a protector in mother nature. A new beginning. I felt a connection to the turtle because I was always empathic to the people around me and felt as though I was a protector. I chose the design in different tints of blue since I felt that the colour blue represents water, sky and calming.
Future Plans: I plan to attend Acadia University for Science.
 
Amelia MacDonald calls Barbados and Nova Scotia home. She has been at KES for 3 years.
Amelia’s artwork choice is Character Rotation (Drawing)
I chose this drawing because it shows character design, and this is the first step toward animating characters. I have worked on a lot of animatics with the app - Procreate. The app helps with planning the characters in three-dimensional space. I also have an interest in film and photography. During the exhibition, I will be showing a few of my short animations.
Future Plans: I plan to attend university for film, photography and animation.
 
Kaylee Hickey is from Hammonds Plains, Nova Scotia and has been at KES for 4 years.
Kaylee’s artwork choice is German Cathedral (Ink and Watercolours)
I chose this drawing to share of architecture because it was inspired by a series of photographs that I took in Germany. I wanted to challenge myself in my drawing skills with focusing on the details of the building. Also, using ink, it made me more of a risk taker by using a material that cannot be erased. The second drawing I added watercolours to bring it to life and to reflect the colours of the Cathedral.
Future Plans: I plan to attend university for either architecture or engineering.

Amy Zhang is from Hong Kong and she has been at KES since Grade 9 (4 years).
Amy’s artwork choice is Perception of Reality (Transfer and Watercolours on Paper)
I chose to share this watercolour because I was drawn by the images and the idea of surrealism.  (Surrealism was a cultural movement which developed in Europe in the aftermath of World War I and was largely influenced by Dada. - Surrealism was a means of reuniting conscious and unconscious realms of experience so completely that the world of dream and fantasy would be joined to the everyday rational world.) In my watercolour, I wanted to use contrast from the lights and darks within the two worlds. Surrealism also influenced my Comparative Study. I wanted to focus on the perception of reality.
Future Plans: I want to go to university either in Hong Kong or Canada, specializing in History.
