Senior Girls Soccer Hammering Home Wins!

girls soccer-1Our KES Senior Girls’ Soccer team is quickly rounding into form just as the Thanksgiving break arrives and upcoming Regional playoffs approach shortly after

Last Friday, October 4th, Digby High School visited KES for what was our first home league game of the season, and what a game it was for the girls wearing red! KES came flying out of the gates forcing all of the play deep into the Digby end of the field and creating a number of high-quality scoring chances in the process. Credit goes to the Digby goalkeeper who bravely stood tall and courageous in denying our early chances.

And then… Allie Martin arrived on scene. The Grade 11 fall season, dual-sport athlete had just finished a hockey game in Brooklyn against visiting Mount Academy from PEI, quickly changed out of her gear and into her soccer kit, then travelled the 20-minute journey from Brooklyn to campus and jumped out of the car ready-willing-and able to enter the on-field fray. Allie made her mark shortly upon her substitution into the game forcing the Digby goalkeeper into a few more stellar saves. Slick passing that broke lines of pressure, proactive running into open spaces, and an eagerness to find that next gear, resulted in Allie scoring all 5 first-half goals! All 5. WOW! Following a massive substitution of personnel at half-time, midfielder Jill Griffith kept the team’s passing rhythm and momentum flowing into the second frame, and then smashed home a 6th KES goal mid-way through the half to account for a dominant KES 6-0 victory.

This past Tuesday, KES hosted Central Kings High School on Jakeman Field in their third league game of the short fall campaign. And, what a game it was! Our girls came out in the end, hanging on for a narrow 2-1 victory, but, what drama! Jill Griffith opened the scoring in the 34th minute as she finished from close range following a nice 4-way passing play initiated by goalkeeper Maya Faucher. A little more than 5 minutes later, Lily Gale latched onto a ball played down her left-wing, pulled a slick move to beat her defender 1 versus 1, and then played a seeing-eye pass through a maze of defenders in front of the goal to an open and eagerly waiting right-winger Hannah Bryant, who was only too willing to hammer the ball home past the Digby ‘keeper and a 2-0 halftime lead. Central Kings regrouped at the interval and came out flying for the last 45 minutes of play. Sure enough, this energy resulted in a well-taken goal in the 78th minute and set up a tense final 12 minutes of the contest. CK came perilously CLOSE to tying the game with 5 minutes to go. Did I say close? So close. So close…except that centre-back Kayla Jarvis’s dogged determination, a moment in time example of never, never-ever giving up on a play, resulted in her tracking down the opposing striker, and, almost at the goal line, somehow flung her body in front of the ball and blocked it from entering the goal. What a play it was and what an example of incredible leadership, one that inspired her teammates to see out the remaining minutes in the opponents’ end of the field. Whew! Final score: KES 2 – CK 1.

Our Regional playoffs will be held on October 18th & 19th and hosted by the South Shore region (either New Germany or Forest Heights-Chester).
