The following newspaper you are about to read is individually and collectively created by my Grade 8 English class. Recently, we finished learning about different speech writing techniques and types. While speeches are delivered by the presenter themselves (whether that be verbally or through sign), it is important to remember how a speech presents itself as a written page; to help students remember this, we compiled our speeches into a newspaper for others to read. Students selected their own topic and style while being challenged to add in a few specific requirements like interviewing and using power words.
After several writing sessions, students then took on the role of peer editor and proofread a partner’s speech. Becoming an editor allowed them to be critical in a supportive manner, and they learned that even though the task may be complete, there is always room for improvement. After students considered their received edits and made the necessary changes, our newspaper was ready to share.
